Organizations

I have conducted research on employee adoption and use of technologies for nearly 15 years now. Most of my research has been conducted in actual organizational settings and over long periods of time. My research in this area can be organized into five major areas:

1. Models: I have been involved in developing and extending the most widely-used theoretical models and frameworks on individual-level technology acceptance and use, with the collection of the papers being cited over 3,000 times. The most current of this is the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), published in MIS Quarterly in 2003. Read more…

2. Interventions: While theoretical models and frameworks are important, of great practical importance is the ability of organizations to enhance acceptance and use of technology through interventions. I have published several papers on a variety of interventions that have been evaluated longitudinally in organizational contexts. Read more…

3. Social networks: Social networks have received a great deal of attention in the trade press. Many believe social networks are one of the most significant drivers of human behavior. For some time now, I have been studying social networks in organizations implementing and deploying technology. My first paper in this stream is forthcoming in MIS Quarterly. Read more…

4. Developing countries: With diffusion of technologies taking place at a breakneck speed in developing countries, particularly India and China, there is a need to understand how technologies diffuse in these countries. Models and frameworks developed from research in developed countries are not necessarily suitable for developing countries. My work, based on large datasets from India, has begun to examine this issue in-depth. Read more...

5. Business Processes: In today’s world, business processes are digitally-enabled as organizations implement cross-functional enterprise systems (i.e., enterprise resources planning systems such as SAP, PeopleSoft, and Oracle) to support and automate business processes. There has been increasing interest in business process standards as organizations across different industries implement these standards to improve intra- and inter-organizational coordination and collaboration and reduce performance variations. I have conducted several large-scale studies to understand the impact of business process changes on employees and organizations. Read More...
