Despite many benefits, there have been several reports of negative consequences of excessive Internet use. Consequences reported range from dropping out of school to broken marriages. My ongoing work in this area focuses on examining the determinants and consequences of excessive Internet use. Along with Srini Venkatraman, a PhD candidate at the University of Arkansas, I am working on a paper that tracked over 250 individuals, who had very low levels of use at the start of the study, over a 3-year period to uncover why individuals engage in excessive Internet use and what the consequences of such use are.
